March 3rd 2026 marks our travel day from London (Heathrow) to San Diego, continuing our World Cruise Blog journey.
We will have until March 7th to get on the time zone and Jet lag which will give us time for extra shopping and discovering San Diego from our central location.
Good morning from London Heathrow Airport!
After a really nice sleep in the hotel, we were up around 8:30 for a lovely cuppa and a quick check online to see where our bags had ended up. Thankfully, they were all showing in Terminal 5, which we took as a good sign! After a nice shower we wandered over to the terminal — which was conveniently connected to the hotel, a very nice touch.
We breezed through fast track and were just about to put our bags through security when Lorna suddenly started to panic… she couldn’t find her phone.
Luckily we hadn’t actually gone through security yet — BUT we had already scanned our tickets to enter the security area. We went back to the ladies who had just let us through and asked if we could quickly run back to the hotel (literally three minutes away), but they explained that once we’d entered the security zone we couldn’t leave again.
Lorna was now in full meltdown mode and I could see she was seriously considering making a run for it! Thankfully I managed to calm her down, and a lovely lady at the desk offered to escort her back to the hotel.
So a big thank you to Imelda for being today’s hero.
Ten minutes later they both returned, with Lorna clutching her phone like it was solid gold. We thanked the staff again and finally headed through security and into the lounge.
And just for the record — this is the second time Lorna has left her phone somewhere… and they call me Dory?! Bloody cheek.
The flight itself was actually really nice. We completely lucked out with the seats — we didn’t pay the extra £300 to pre-book them, but somehow ended up with the ones we wanted anyway. Result! So we settled in for the 10½-hour flight. The food was really good and the pillow they supplied made sleeping so much easier, so thank you BA. We arrived into San Diego right on time, and to our surprise bags, customs and immigration were all a breeze — especially considering everything that’s been going on.
Getting to the hotel was slightly more eventful as our driver didn’t turn up, so we had to call an XXXL Uber to fit all the bags. Eventually we arrived at the hotel and checked in, where we were told we’d been upgraded to the 11th floor.
Unfortunately Lorna wasn’t too impressed, as the room overlooked the trams and with the single-glazed windows it was pretty noisy. So we made the usual polite complaint and — result again — we were upgraded to Suite 1104. Not only was it quiet, it was huge and really lovely. Lorna was instantly much happier… and to be honest, so was I. As we were both absolutely knackered after the journey, we ordered room service and called it a night. So we’ve arrived in San Diego… and the adventure can finally begin.
